Social interactions, residential segregation and the dynamics of tipping

چکیده

Abstract We develop an analytically tractable population dynamics model of heterogeneous agents to characterize how social interactions within a neighborhood determine the dynamic evolution its ethnic composition. conditions under which integration or segregation will occur, depends on majority’s externality parameter and net benefit from leaving, minority’s leaving probability. Minority may result process tipping, arise three possible channels: two are related exogenous shocks (migration flows changes in tipping points) one is endogenous probabilistic features our framework (endogenous polarization). This characterization yields interesting policy implications for urban planning policies mitigate segregation.

Tipping and the Dynamics of Segregation

In a classic paper, Schelling (1971) showed that extreme segregation can arise from social interactions in white preferences: once the minority share in a neighborhood exceeds a critical "tipping point," all the whites leave. We use regression discontinuity methods and Census tract data from 1970 through 2000 to test for discontinuities in the dynamics of neighborhood racial composition. White ...

Tipping and Residential Segregation: A Unified Schelling Model

This paper presents a Schelling-type checkerboard model of residential segregation formulated as a spatial game. It shows that although every agent prefers to live in a mixed-race neighborhood, complete segregation is observed almost all of the time. A concept of tipping is rigorously defined, which is crucial for understanding the dynamics of segregation. Complete segregation emerges and persi...

Status and challenges of waste segregation in residential communities

Degradation of urban environment and health hazard is directly associated with the unscientific handling of Municipal solid waste of India. Urbanization also contribute intensify Municipal solid waste generation. Source segregation of solid waste not only the fact to converge but also possible in maximum resource recovery from the waste. Waste management is a problem due to the ineffective mana...
